SALISBURY — Housed in Sea Gull Square on the Salisbury University campus, Breakfast Bum offers breakfast all day long, as well as an environment designed to make people feel at home — even when they’re away from it.
The restaurant opened in May.
“We do breakfast all day, and then we have lunch and dinner specials,” said owner/manager Patti Tauber.
The waffle sandwich is the restaurant’s top-seller.
“It’s a whole waffle cut in half with eggs,” said Tauber. “Some people put cheese, scrapple — whatever kind of meat you want — and it ends up being about 2 inches high. It’s fun to watch people eat, especially when you get tiny little kids in here who can eat the whole thing down in seconds flat.”
Pancake wraps, another twist on a breakfast classic, are also popular.
“Everything is cooked to order,” Tauber said. “We make homemade Sloppy Joes, homemade beefaroni, homemade chicken salad, pulled pork, barbeque and cole slaw.”
The homemade approach, according to Tauber, is designed to make customers feel comfortable at Breakfast Bum.
“One of the ideas when we came into here was that there was a bunch of college students around us who didn’t get that anymore,” Tauber said. “They’ll tell me, ‘I’ve been here for two years, and I can’t remember the last time somebody cooked for me like this.’ So I’m trying to portray a family environment where they feel at home and safe. They come in and talk about their classes, they vent, and I have games for them to play while they wait for their breakfast or their lunch to be prepared.”
The restaurant also offers lunch delivery.
Tauber plans to host a number of activities and specials throughout the week.
Mondays will be movie nights, picked by customers via a weekly drawing. Tie-dye Tuesdays offer customers in tie-dye attire 10 percent discounts. Thirsty Thursday specials will include free drinks with meals, Flashback Fridays will feature karaoke and Saturday evenings will be open mic nights.
“Ninety percent of our students here on campus are minors,” Tauber said. “So if you keep them out of trouble and offer them a little guidance, it helps everybody.
“We’re hoping that’s where it’s going, and so far it seems like they love us.”
The restaurant has been approached about opening a second location area campus.
“That’s probably our next step,” Tauber said. “Our prices are very affordable for college age, and a lot of people come in after church on Sundays so they can get a healthy portion for their dollar.”
